In Living Memory | An Exhibition of Contemporary Still Life

Oliver Sears Gallery at Emo Court

In association with the Office of Public Works

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Emo Court being bequeathed to the nation, Oliver Sears Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of contemporary Still Life to mark the inaugural opening of the first floor Gallery Rooms of the house.

This newly conserved grand Georgian space will host a collection of some 60 contemporary works by, among others, Peter Blake, Michael Craig-Martin, David Hockney, Hughie O’Donoghue,  Camille Souter, Amelia Stein and Sasha Sykes.

In Living Memory brings a selection of artists and artworks, both national and international, to the midlands for visitors to engage with during the summer months.

Emo Court was once home to a spectacular art collection, assembled over generations by the Dawson-Damer family, Earls of Portarlington. Old Master paintings including works by Van Dyck, Rubens, Breughel, Giorgione and Guido Reni and later works by Angelica Kauffman and Canaletto all hung in the Picture Gallery and throughout the House. When Major Cholmeley Harrison acquired Emo Court in 1969, he furnished the house with his art collection. These artworks were later acquired by the OPW when the house was bequeathed to the nation.

It is against this background and inspired by this history that Oliver Sears Gallery, in association with the OPW, presents the inaugural exhibition of contemporary Still Life artworks at the newly conserved Gallery Rooms at Emo Court.

A catalogue will accompany the exhibition.

Events during the RHA Annual Exhibition 2019

The Art Form Evenings take place in the form of a tour which highlights exhibited works within a specific medium, Amelia Stein will host the photography event 22nd May 2019 from 5.30 – 6.30 pm.

Spanning 250 years, Shaping Ireland, Landscapes in Irish Art comprises artworks by 50 artists exploring the relationship between people and the environment.

Encompassing a range of artistic media, from paintings and sculptures to photography and video, this exhibition examines the representation of different land types to reveal the significant role artists have played in visualising aspects of human impact on the shape of the natural world.

The Parted Veil: Commemoration in photographic practices will be an exhibition of Irish artists who use the photographic image to consider ideas of remembrance and celebration, and especially to reflect how intimate experiences express the wider events shaping our contemporary world.

As part of the Decade of Commemorations, The Parted Veil: Commemoration in photographic practices will take place at the Glucksman, University College Cork, from April – July 201

REGARD X, a celebration of the outstanding contribution made by women to the National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland.   The University of Limerick is home to this extraordinary collection of self-portraits that are available to view across the campus. Paintings, sculptures, print, photography, film, textile art and many other media are all represented in this exhibition that charts the changing face of Irish art.  REGARD X will be launched by Abigail O’Brien, first woman President of the Royal Hibernian Academy .
