The Map Maker’s Sorrow by Chris Lee, Peacock Theatre, Dublin, 1999
“It isn’t everyday you get asked to play the role of ‘Death’, wearing a dress that looked more like it was designed for a red carpet than a stairway to heaven. The character held people’s hands as she led them from one world into the next, calmly philosophising as she went about grief and loss. My own father died suddenly during the production, and a few hours after I heard the news, I was delivering a monologue with these words:” What is a ghost? What is a memory? When you dream about someone can they be said to exist in your dream? Is the echo of his voice reality, or just the sound of your grief?” My eternal thanks to the cast and crew for holding my hand, very tightly, throughout.
